The Way Ahead

As the Army transforms, units formerly known as brigades, divisions, corps, and Armies will develop into modular "Plug and Play" units. The new war fighting elements are referred to as Stryker Brigade Combat Teams, Brigade Combat Teams, Support Units of Action, and Units of Employment. In synchronization with the Army's transformation, robust Air Defense Artillery ADAM Cells will form at each of these organizations to coordinate and plan for the introduction of Air Defense forces onto the battlefield. Targeting, airspace command and control, and early warning are common functions performed by officers assigned to these cells. All ADA combat units will be assigned to the UEy-level of command and task organized to UEx or lower levels of command as missions dictate. ADA units will reorganize into composite AMD or MAMD battalions consisting of Patriot, Avenger and Sentinel systems; or Patriot pure battalions. As mentioned in the opening paragraphs, future plans include the introduction of a host of new missile systems (shooters) and early warning systems (sensors) which will integrate into these units overtime.

The transformation of the ADA force will improve its expeditionary attributes, enhance its lethality, mobility, and deployability; and provide the Army and Regional Combatant Commanders, a modular, tailorable force capable of operating on joint and multi-national battlefield. The Army's Transformation has expanded the role of Air Defenders on the battlefield and has led the way for increased participation in the planning and execution of air defense operations in Army, Joint and coalition/multi-national operations. In summary, ADA transformation will create a less command centric career path for ADA Officers. This major cultural change will allow more diverse key developmental positions, assignment locations, and military/civilian educational opportunities.
