Officers at this rank have an increased opportunity to make a greater contribution to the branch and the Army. Lieutenant Colonels can be assigned to a variety of battalion, brigade, division, corps, Major Command, Joint, Multinational and Department of The Army positions throughout our military. Branch qualifying positions for Lieutenant Colonels are Battalion or Garrison Command. Duty positions Lieutenant Colonels serve in are:

• Brigade Deputy Commander
• Department of Defense (DoD)/Joint/Army/Major Command (MACOM) staff
• Corps Air Defense Element cell OIC
• GMD Brigade XO
• GMD Brigade Fire Direction Center director
• Division/Corps staff
• ROTC PMS
• AC/RC Support
• Service School staff
• State Senior Army Advisor to the Adjutant General
• Program Managers for current and future systems
